How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find, especially when they're a Bosch unit like ours. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues in your car. It's a vital component of your Audi's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. When this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
