Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet shop on the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would alter our perception of the intelligence of birds. Her work with him challenged the common belief that birds can only mimic human speech, without any understanding of what it means.
